Azolla Food Description
English
Azolla (Azolla pinnata), a small aquatic fern belonging to the Azollaceae family, is commonly used as cattle fodder. This tiny branching plant features a main stem with pinnate side branches. Due to its reduced and specialized form, Azolla resembles duckweed or mosses more than typical ferns. The side branches are longer at the base of the stem, giving the fronds a roughly triangular shape. Each frond consists of numerous overlapping, rounded leaves, which are covered with tiny hairs on their upper surface.
While the fronds are usually bright green, they can develop a reddish hue when exposed to direct sunlight, making them appear like red velvet on the water’s surface. Individual fronds typically reach lengths of 1.5 to 2.5 cm (0.6-1.0 inches). Azolla's native range extends from Africa to India, Southeast Asia, and Australia
